In an effort to create magical memories with my mom's extended family, we embarked on a magical journey together. Collaborating with my husband and parents, we decided to host a Harry Potter-themed reunion that would transport us to the wizarding world. The event was filled with whimsical activities, and here's a detailed account of the magical experiences!
Invitations:
We set the tone by crafting and sending out invitations that resembled the letter Harry received for Hogwarts. You can see the example below!
Decorations:
Before the gathering, my parent’s home underwent a magical transformation with decorations inspired by the wizarding world. From a Magical Menagerie to a Honeydukes-inspired setup, check out the gallery below!
Sorting Ceremony:
As each family arrived, the Sorting Ceremony commenced. Using a computerized PotterMore quiz, each family member was sorted into their house which we used as teams for the upcoming Triwizard Tournament.
Triwizard Tournament:
The highlight of the reunion was the Triwizard Tournament, consisting of three thrilling challenges:
Dragon Toss Tournament: A cornhole competition with a magical twist. Teams sent their best cornhole player to represent their team!
Don't Drop the Mermaid: Water balloon volleyball with teams competing for victory.
Horcrux Hunt: An elaborate scavenger hunt with clues leading to the coveted Triwizard Cup. See a more in depth explanation and find the clues here!
Classes:
For both kids and adults, we organized classes like Charms & Transfiguration, where jewelry and keychains were crafted, Potions class for mixing up magical concoctions, and Defense Against the Dark Arts, featuring an exhilarating water balloon fight.
Pet Adoption:
The Magical Menagerie offered dragon and unicorn Beanie Boos for adoption. Each child selected a magical companion and filled out adoption papers. You can find the adoption papers below!
Dragon Egg Hunt & Adoption:
The kids embarked on an exciting dragon egg hunt, discovering baby dragons hidden inside easter eggs. We also had geode rocks hidden around for kids to find and then break open with hammers. They filled out adoption papers and cracked open geodes to unveil the crystals inside.
The Wand Chooses the Wizard:

I have the coolest husband in the world! He is amazingly talented and he makes some gorgeous pieces. For the reunion he made 40 WANDS on his lathe! Aren’t they amazing! We added tags and a dot of paint on the bottom of each one to differentiate what each “core” was. (Find here) We had Unicorn hair, Phoenix Feather, dragon heartstring, etc. Then we took our twister spinner and put each of 4 cores inside and each person got to use the spinner and was presented with a wand with the corresponding core from Mr. Dylan “Olli-Melander”! Note that you can make wands in different ways if you don’t have a lathe!
Magical Movie Night with Sparklers & Honeydukes:
To conclude the reunion, we enjoyed an outdoor screening of "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone." Accompanied by a setup reminiscent of Honeydukes, kids used Gringotts coins (from the dollar store) to "purchase" snacks and treats for the movie. Our Harry Potter treat and snack menu can be found here!
